BizTalk end-of-life: what it actually means

Microsoft BizTalk Server is reaching the end of its lifecycle. For many organizations, BizTalk has been a reliable foundation for business-critical integrations for years. End-of-life means no more Microsoft security patches, no support for new OS or SQL Server versions, and a shrinking pool of BizTalk specialists available to maintain it.

Integrations are rarely isolated technical components. They connect systems, partners, and business processes, often across organizational boundaries. Any change in this area needs to be planned carefully to protect daily operations and customer experience.

What you actually need from a BizTalk migration

If you’re moving off BizTalk, you’re not looking for a replacement in a box. These are business-critical integrations – your expectations are broader and business-driven. Most customers we work with want:

  • A Microsoft-supported platform with active development and ongoing security updates
  • Pre-built connectors via Azure Logic Apps – instead of building and maintaining each integration manually
  • Consumption-based pricing – pay for what you use, not large upfront licenses
  • No more dependency on rare BizTalk specialists
  • A gradual transition where old and new can run in parallel – not a high-risk single-step migration

Aligned with Microsoft’s recommended direction

Microsoft has clearly stated that BizTalk Server does not have a direct successor. The recommended path is to move toward Azure Integration Services and other modern, cloud-based integration platforms – focused on cloud-native design, scalability, and reduced operational overhead.

Microsoft also acknowledges that migration should be gradual and selective, allowing organizations to modernize at their own pace rather than through a single large replacement project. This is exactly how Proekspert approaches BizTalk migrations: step-by-step, risk-aware, focused on long-term sustainability rather than one-time migration.

How we approach the transition

The goal is not just to migrate technology, but to keep the business running and improving throughout the journey. Our approach is built around a few clear principles.

Business-first migration

We start with the most critical processes, so each step delivers real value and reduces risk from the beginning.

Continuous delivery into production

Migration is not a long, invisible project. Progress is visible, measurable, and regularly released into production.

Parallel operation and risk control

Existing BizTalk solutions can run alongside new cloud-native integrations until you’re ready to switch fully.

Cloud-native and scalable by design

Solutions are built for reliability, scalability, and operational simplicity.

Technology-agnostic and cost-aware

Azure, AWS or alternative is chosen based on business needs, not preference. Cloud cost optimization is treated as a core requirement, not an afterthought.

Case study

Cloud migration and remote management modernization for heat pump products

Client challenge / business need

A global heat pump manufacturer – a leading player in home heating – was outgrowing its existing online service platform that lets homeowners and installers control heat pumps remotely. Business growth was straining the legacy system; customer feedback was starting to suffer. The company needed cloud infrastructure flexible enough to evolve with the business, with stability and a smooth end-user experience as non-negotiable.

Technologies

Microsoft Azure, C#, .NET Core, EF Core, MS SQL, Kubernetes, Docker, React JS

Solution at a glance

Proekspert rebuilt the system architecture as a scalable, modular cloud platform – moving functionalities to Azure one by one, replacing legacy code with more efficient implementations as we went. The migration was gradual by design: end-users experienced only a system becoming better, without the downtime annoyances that often accompany system updates. In parallel, our design team interviewed real homeowners and installers to overhaul the customer experience.

Results

Scalable Azure cloud platform supporting business growth and multiple product upgrades simultaneously

Significantly decreased support load – most complaint calls and emails ended immediately after improvements went live

Reduced operating cost through Azure’s pay-as-you-go model – no large upfront infrastructure investments

Engineering refocused on innovation – client now builds new products instead of servicing the existing system, at lower cost

What you get with Proekspert

Aligned with Microsoft’s direction

Gradual, selective migration to modern cloud-based integration services – exactly how Microsoft itself recommends approaching BizTalk migrations.
