From the basement of the Institute of Chemical and Biological Physics, Raivo Vilu puts down Proekspert's first roots. What began as a 1980s startup (we didn't call them that then), focusing on bioreactor control software used in the pharmaceutical industry and cell biology research laboratories, is entered into the business registry on March 22, 1991, under the name BioExpert.
1991A small team of engineers founds Proekspert on April 6, 1993. Its focus is creating software. From the beginning it differs from classic software companies, since its solutions are created for both computers and smart devices. Control systems are programmed for bioreactors, payment machines, and industrial production lines.
1993Proekspert develops a smart card for Raebank, its first major client. One of the first smart card projects in Europe, the system developed is the genesis of Estonian banking's card center.
1994It's a new era in business intelligence and warehousing projects. Proekspert establishes clear expertise in data source analysis, metadata, data warehouse architecture, populating data warehouses with data from diverse legacy systems, and designing end-user reports. Many large retail organizations adopt data warehouse solutions developed by Proekspert.
1998Proekspert begins to develop the latest products and services for large Nordic telecom operators and equipment vendors, including Telia. In addition to traditional software development, the work includes independent research in state-of-the-art internet- and communications technology that will shape the digital landscape for years to come.
1999Work with the Danish group Danfoss begins in the spring of 2003. Proekspert's industrial automation software ensures that production lines, construction cranes, and elevators work flawlessly and safely the world over. Danfoss acquires 51% of Proekpsert's shares.
2003An office is established in Tartu, Estonia's university city, in order to exploit the city's science-based ecosystem. Marko Petron, Proekspert's head of industrial automation leads the effort. (Today, Proekspert’s Tartu office is located at Ülikooli 6a.)
2008A novel based on real events and the life of programmers at Proekspert in the early 1990s became Estonia's number one bestseller for a period of two weeks.
2013To make the company more client-oriented and increase employee satisfaction, Proekspert adopts a bossless structure inspired by holacracy principles. This move empowers employees with greater autonomy and decision-making authority, fostering collaboration and innovation. It marks a pivotal step toward creating a human-centered and self-managed organization aligned with Proekspert's core values.
2013Employees purchase Proekspert's shares from the Danish industrial group Danfoss, making Proekspert a fully employee-owned company. "The best organizations are those where the employees are owners themselves," says Marko Sverdlik, Proekspert's CEO. The buyback also enables Proekspert to develop new competences outside Danfoss' primary focus areas.
2015Proekspert is named Design Implementer of the Year at the Enterprise Estonia Entrepreneurship Awards. It is also shortlisted for Company of the Year.
2016Proekspert expands its number of offices so people may work where they like. An office is opened on Tallinn Street in the town of Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa.
2016What began as a temporary summer office in the Estonian seaside resort city of Pärnu becomes a permanent office. Today the office is located on Aia Street.
2017Proekspert data scientists make European Space Agency equipment last longer in space. The project's main goal is to test artificial intelligence algorithms to help monitor the condition of reaction wheels, potentially increasing the longevity of mission critical assets.
2019The Responsible Business Forum recognizes Estonian companies that care about the environment and contribute to society more than the law requires. Proekspert receives a Bronze badge in the category of medium- and large companies.
2021As part of its continuous commitment to innovation and teamwork, Proekspert refines its organizational structure to better balance autonomy with strategic alignment. By learning from its earlier bossless approach, the company evolves into a model that empowers teams to collaborate effectively while ensuring shared accountability and client focus. This thoughtful iteration strengthens Proekspert’s ability to deliver innovative solutions while remaining a dependable, human-centered partner for clients.
2022This recognition shows that Proekspert values the mental well-being of its employees and takes conscious steps to ensure that people's health is maintained.
2023Proekspert opened its first branch outside Estonia in May 2024. The new company strengthens the Estonian custom software and service company’s connection with its Finnish customers.
